Competition Fuels Math Madness

On October 23, Math Madness faced once again Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, Michigan.

This was a team that just defeated us a week ago in the team’s previous match.

This time, though, the format was different: students competed in groups of two or three, submitting one quiz per group.

The fierce rivalry between the MacDuffie groups resulted in extremely high scores, and the MacDuffie defeated Stoney Creek 6.0 to 4.71.

Two MacDuffie groups received perfect scores:  Allan Wan and Charley Lee,  and Tri Nguyen, Toby Tran and David Gorestki.

Congratulations to those players for an especially successful day! All the teams did amazingly well, with no team getting less than 5 out of 7.

The format change was a fun change of pace for the team. As one student said, “We should do it this way every week!”

Next week, on October 30, the team will meet its first opponent in the bracket tournament to finish off the year.

Our opponents hail from the Academic Magnet School in North Charleston, South Carolina.

One of these two teams will advance to the second round of the Math Madness Tournament for 2014.
