MacDuffie Celebrates 125 Years

On Saturday, April 25, 2015 The MacDuffie School will host a 125th Anniversary Gala at 6pm on its Granby, MA campus. The gala event will feature a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner, dancing, and student performances. Funds raised during the evening will go towards the school’s new performing arts center.

The 125th Anniversary Gala is part of Alumni Weekend 2015. During the weekend festivities, MacDuffie will honor this year’s Distinguished Alumna, Tracie Gardner, Class of 1983. “Ms. Gardner has truly distinguished herself in her field, and we’re thrilled to be able to honor her with this well-deserved award on the occasion of our 125th Anniversary,” Head of School Steven Griffin. A special all-school assembly will be held on the afternoon of Friday, April 24, 2015 to present Ms. Garner with the Distinguished Alumna award after which she will address the student body.

Ms. Gardner was recently appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to be Assistant Secretary of Health for New York State. She previously served as Co-Director of Policy for the Legal Action Center where she conducted and coordinated the Center’s New York State public policy advocacy in the areas of substance use disorders, criminal justice, and HIV/AIDS. Ms. Gardner has worked on a wide array of city, state, and federal health and social service policy issues since 1989. She has also served on the New York State AIDS Advisory Council for the past nine years. Her advocacy work and leadership have been honored by the Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats, New York City Council, and the Young Women of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition. After graduating from MacDuffie, Ms. Gardner went on to earn a B.A. in English from Mount Holyoke College.

Auditions for Spring Play

The Spring Sampler will feature six one act plays. The one acts will be split between the Middle School and Upper School with 2 plays starring Middle School students and 4 plays starring Upper School students. Play performances will be held on Friday, May 15th and Saturday, May 16th.

Wednesday, March 4th at 1pm in The Little Theater

MacDuffie Players present ‘The Pajama Game’

MacDuffie Theater will present the hilarious 1950’s musical comedy The Pajama Game.

This is a lively comic look at the Sleep Tite Pajama Company’s struggle with Local 343 of the Associated Garment Workers of North America over a 7 1/2 Cent raise.

Factory owner Myron Hasler, played by Junior Ian Sores of Longmeadow, and his Efficiency Expert Vernon Hines, played by Sophomore Ethan Shelburne of Northhampton, try to hold the line against the Union led by international student Bobby Gu. Hasler hires a new plant superintendent, Senior and MacDuffie stage veteran Darien Guy of Springfield. Complications occur when a romance develops between the new superintendent and Babe Williams, played by Junior Gina Napolitano, the head of the grievance committee. In addition Hines is in love with flirtatious secretary Gladys Hotchkiss, Junior Suzette Appiah of Springfield. His jealousy had comic and possibly lethal consequences. The superintendent’s secretary Mabel, Sophomore Courtney Hurley, keeps track of the goings on in the factory, as management and labor move toward a showdown.

A cast of thirty singers and dancers, and a six piece orchestra, will bring “The Pajama Game” to life at The MacDuffie School’s Little Theater in Granby, MA on Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th at 8PM, and Sunday, March 1, at 3PM. Such memorable tunes as “Hey There You With the Stars in Your Eyes”, “Steam Heat”, and “Hernando’s Hideaway”, will delight our audience, in this fast and funny look at life in the American heartland over sixty years ago.

The Parent Association will host a Spaghetti Dinner opening night Friday, February 27th. For only $8, you can have a wonderful three course meal prepared by our talented Sage staff. Tickets are available online in conjunction with Pajama Game tickets or at the door.  Dinner is at 7:00 PM.

The MacDuffie Arts Department is holding their major fundraiser!

The Chocolate Festival

A Family Event focused on Chocolate & Valentine’s Day

Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 3-5 PM

(Right After Open House)

We need volunteers for the following:

  • To bake chocolate desserts
  • To help promote the event
  • To create gift baskets
  • To set up before the event
  • To help out during the event
  • To clean up after the event

At the event chocolate products (mostly homemade chocolates!) will be sold as well as local artists artworks (which make Great Gifts!)

8TH GRADE PLAY AND ART SHOW

8TH GRADE PLAY AND ART SHOW

The 8th grade play will be held Wednesday, January 14th at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM – admission is free on a first come basis).

The 8th graders have researched and developed their own work on the self-chosen topic: Death, Dying, & Grief.

The performance is composed of small plays on this topic and other various dramatic explorations ranging from zombies to suicide.

The students have written journal entries, conducted surveys and interviews, researched facts, selected poetry and music related to the topic, and held class room discussions in order to create the material for this performance.

In addition to the performance, student-created visual art pieces will also be on display.
