Leadership is more than a skill. It’s an experience.

As a core value that supports our mission statement, leadership holds a  prominent role in the MacDuffie community. Our students demonstrate leadership in the classroom, on the field, in the arts, and through service. Throughout their time here, they work closely with our faculty and staff as part of our Path to Excellence advising program.

These elements of leadership and advising come together in our Leadership Program. One of our diploma requirements is that every graduate of The MacDuffie School will fulfill a leadership requirement, culminating in a leadership practicum.

Our leadership requirement has the following components:

  • Course work: either 1/2 credit in Public Speaking or a full credit in Acting

  • Leadership Seminar: small-group work in advising to prepare for leadership, including personal leadership inventories and working in small groups on leadership projects

  • Community Service: a service hours requirement (currently 10 hours per year enrolled at MacDuffie)

  • A Leadership Practicum: students will declare a leadership activity, write a reflection on it, and be evaluated by their mentor.

  • Students will track their progress in an online portfolio and will present a reflection on their leadership journey during the spring of their senior year.

Select students who demonstrate the highest levels of excellence both in the quality of the leadership experience and in personal growth will receive a leadership award.

We believe that this curriculum requirement provides students with relevant, mindful leadership opportunities and experience.
