MacDuffie’s dance program inspires students to assume a greater role in their technical and creative development through technique classes, performance practices, and choreography. The program is designed to give students of all abilities the opportunity to explore dance as a performing art.

Dance Courses

Through our modern dance curriculum, students use improvisation, choreography, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and anatomy to establish sound technique and performance skills. All courses approach dance through historical and cultural perspectives so students develop an appreciation of the art form. Each student is asked to challenge themselves physically, intellectually, mindfully, and emotionally and to embrace ideas about how their dancing merges with their personal value system, the CIRCLE values, and our global community.

Choreographic Opportunities

Choreography class is offered every Spring Semester and aims to enrich students’ knowledge about creating meaning through movement. By discovering the creative process, students explore components of a composition by generating their own ideas into a final piece to be presented in the annual Spring Dance Concert.

The MacDuffie Dancers

The MacDuffie Dancers meet after school and is open to all students (grades 6-12) who want to continue development and growth within technique and performance. These rehearsals and classes afford the chance to learn and perform works by faculty and guest artists to be presented in the annual dance concerts. Previous guest artists include local, regional and international choreographers

National Honor Society of Dance Arts

NHSDA is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance.

Students can apply to be inducted in their junior year.

The MacDuffie NHSDA was established in 2017.

Our alumni have studied dance at Bard College, Mount Holyoke College, Vassar College, Hampshire College, Wagner College, UARTS, and New York University.
